Fitting Instructions for Covering Your Existing Staircase

Procedure for fitting m.d.f sides

  1.  Covering the sides of your staircase we use 6mm m.d.f. this comes in sizes of 220mm by 2.1 meters or 300mm by 2.1 meters , alternative sizes available on request.
  2. Place the m.d.f. on top of the original steps, and using a square to mark out the cuts.
  3. When replacing the sides you can leave them slightly higher than the original string as this gives you more work space for your new steps.

 Procedure for fitting new steps

1.      When using our system to cover an existing staircase, it is not necessary to cut the original staircase in any way.

2.      Start at the first riser, at the bottom of the staircase you measure the distance from the floor to the top of the existing step this will give you the width of your new riser the off cut from your riser it is used for a packer against the bottom of the old riser - most of the installation is common sense.

3.       Measure the length of the riser always remember to check your strings are square, if not adjust your cut accordingly.

4.      When cutting the riser to the length we find if you cut a slight angle on the back of the riser or backplane it fits tighter and easier. .

5.      The off cut from your riser is glued to the face of the old riser with three spots of staircase glue. After the packer has been glued, place three spots of glue on the front of the packer and also on the nose of the original step this will attach your new riser in place.

6.      When fitting the new step you apply lines of staircase glue from the back  to the front of the old step, approximately 10mm thick about three to 4in. apart .

7.      Duplicate the process to get to the top of stairs.

8.      Winder steps are also available, to ensure the winder step is made properly you must make a template of the original step marking the top and any round edges ,the easiest way of making this is to use brown backing paper or wallpaper - when you are making templates place them in an envelope and post them to us.

9.      Quarter round base steps are available we only need to know when you’re standing looking at the staircase if it’s a right hand are left hand and  the  measurements.
